Redruth United v Carharrack

3pm  30 September 2017

Cornwall Combination
Redruth United 1 Carharrack 9 (att 20)

Cornwall might not have been the best destination for a weekend away given the weather forecast, and the Clijah Croft ground in Redruth definitely wasn't a wise choice on an afternoon when the strong winds meant the heavy rain was horizontal.

Still, at least the game was played as I'd feared a possible postponement, and with waterproofs and a sturdy umbrella I managed to enjoy the 90 minutes, probably more than than home team who were torn apart by an impressive Carharrack.

The visitors had the conditions in their favour in the first half and led 4-0 by half time. Any hopes Redruth had of some respite in the second half were unfounded, as Carharrack added five more. The home keeper made some good saves, including keeping out a penalty.

Clijah Croft is a sports ground on a hill above Redruth, so players and spectators are exposed to the elements.

I knew what to expect though, having been here for a Portreath AFC home game in 2010. Portreath have since folded, but the railed off pitch they used back then was staging a Storm FC tie in the Cornwall Junior Cup while I was watching Redruth United.

Redruth's pitch, closest to the car park (allowing many of the 'crowd' for my game to watch the action from behind windscreens), is enclosed by posts, rope and dugouts, all in the club's black and red colours, with advertising boards completing a neat ground.
