St Aldhelms v Totterdown United at Fry Club FC

11am  7 August 2016

Fry Club Cup Final at Fry Club FC
St Aldhelms 6 Totterdown United 2 (att 160)

The Fry Club Cup is an annual pre-season knockout for teams in and around Bristol, making use of the multiple football pitches at Fry's sports ground in Keynsham. It's a competition with a long history, and by the final is certainly a competitive affair.

The closure of Cadbury's Keynsham factory has been well-documented, and the housing development that's being built on the site has also swallowed the former football pitch used by Fry Club FC in the Somerset County League.

Developers are marketing the site as the 'Chocolate Quarter', and large blocks of 'retirement apartments' are going up close to Fry Club's new home. The club only moved in last season, and the venue is shaping up nicely with a floodlit pitch beyond a modern pavilion which houses facilities including changing rooms, a bar and a gym.

Away in the distance are other football pitches, several of which were also hosting games. One of those was the final of the Brunel Shield, a cup for the 16 teams knocked out in the first round of the Fry Cup.

The main event was a clash between St Aldhelms, of the Bristol and Suburban League, and Totterdown United, from the Bristol Premier Combination. As far as I'm aware the two leagues are a comparable level, but St Aldhelms won this at a canter.

They benefited from a stiff breeze in the first half, and had a 3-1 advantage by half time. Totterdown pulled a goal back in the second half, but couldn't sustain a revival and St Aldhelms added three more goals to begin their season by lifting a cup.
