AEK-Boco 1 Cheltenham Civil Service 2 (att 120)
AEK-Boco began the defence of their Gloucestershire County League crown at home to the team who'd won the title the year before, and it was Civil Service who left with three points.
Last season the visitors struggled, fortunate to avoid relegation after apparently losing many of their league-winning players. According to the AEK-Boco match programme, several of those players have now returned, and it was a tough afternoon for the newer champions.
In conditions too hot for football, it was a slow first half. Apart from a good safe to deny AEK-Boco there was little excitement. The home side had looked the better team, but they were undone when the visitors went in front two minutes into the second period.
AEK-Boco were level after an hour, but couldn't get in front against a resolute defence, and paid the price when Cheltenham Civil Service got a late winner.
Bristol-based AEK-Boco were formed in 2003 by a merger of AEK Rangers and Boco Juniors. According to their programme they provide football for over 500 children, and judging by the crowd watching their senior team they're well supported by the local community.
The ground, in Greenbank Road in the Hanham area of Bristol, is fairly typical for the Gloucestershire County League, with the main pitch railed off and adjacent to a decent, and busy, clubhouse.
