Hatfield Social v Belstone

6.30pm  12 April 2016

Herts Senior County League, Premier Division
Hatfield Social 1 Belstone 2 (att 19)

At the end of a long working day in London I just about had time to get to Hertfordshire in time for Hatfield Social's 6.30 kick off.

Getting a train from King's Cross to Hatfield to easy enough, but I had to rely on taxi to make the last few miles to Lemsford Village Hall, eventually arriving just a couple of minutes before the action got underway.

Football venues can be confusing, Lemsford FC used to play in Lemsford but now have a home pitch at Welwyn, allowing Hatfield Social to move from Hatfield into Lemsford, a small village just outside the town.

The pitch is behind the village hall, and is railed off along the near side and behind one goal, with the far side and the other end effectively out of bounds to spectators. A pair of temporary shelters serve as dugouts for coaches and substitutes.

Belstone are going well in the league and were on course for a comfortable and unremarkable win against their struggling hosts. Two first half goals put them in the driving seat, and in a second half of few chances that looked to be that.

Hatfield Social weren't finished though, and late on pulled a goal back to set up an exciting final few minutes. The home side piled on the pressure in search of a second goal, but despite a few scares Belstone held on to win.

An unexpected bonus was Hatfield Social's programme, given away free. I think it's a rule in the Herts League that premier division clubs are supposed to issue, but it's a big ask for early evening midweek games so I was impressed that Hatfield had made the effort (even if the programme had the name of the wrong opposition on the cover).
