Thornhill v Aberford Albion

2.30pm  5 March 2016

West Yorkshire League, Division One
Thornhill 4 Aberford Albion 7 (att 15)

On an afternoon when I needed to be home early, and when bad weather caused plenty of postponements, I got lucky with a local game that survived the conditions and produced an 11 goal thriller.

In truth the game was won in the opening 15 minutes, during which time a woeful Thornhill defence conceded four times. A penalty restored some pride, but Aberford still added a fifth goal before half time.

The second period could have been a non-event, but with both sides much better in attack than in defence it was great to watch. Thornhill eventually "won" the half 3-2, but both sides had plenty of chances to score more.

Thornhill, just outside Dewsbury, are based at the local cricket and bowls club. They have a railed off pitch on a slight plateau to the side of the sports ground, but since the demise of the cricket club most first team games are now on a new pitch that covers the former cricket ground.

Currently the pitch isn't railed or roped off, although the ground itself is well enclosed. There's a clubhouse directly behind the goal, built onto which is a small covered area, designed primarily for smokers rather than spectators.

A third football pitch, at right angles to the other two, sit on top of a steep bank behind the goal nearest the entrance.

Thornhill are battling against relegation this season, and this result will have done them no favours, but they showed that can score goals, and with decent facilities I hope they can stay at this level and thrive.
