Burton Albion reserves v Shrewsbury Town reserves

2pm  2 November 2015

Development League, West Division
Burton Albion reserves 0 Shrewsbury Town reserves 4 (att 18)

As it's just up the road it makes sense for Burton Albion to play their reserve team games at the FA's National Football Centre at St George's Park, and this Monday afternoon game gave me the chance to tick off another of its many pitches.

In September I watched Derby County's second team on pitch six, last season I was at a game on pitch five, and several years ago, before the centre was completed, I saw Burton's youth team on what is now labelled as pitch 12.

Today's action was on pitch one, which is floodlit and mostly enclosed, but offers no real facilities for the few spectators. The biggest challenge was seeing the action, the FA may have spent millions on St George's Park, but there's nothing to be done when the place is shrouded by thick fog.

I just about made out Shrewsbury's four goals, two in each half as they strolled to a surprisingly easy victory. Not being familiar with the squads of either club, I don't know the relative strengths of the sides they put out.

The Development League, or the Final Third Development League to include the sponsors, is the latest incarnation of the Central League, which has provided reserve team football for Football League sides since the 1920s.
