Swansea Senior League, Division One

My first experience of Swansea Senior League football, but it was well worth the trip to south Wales to see what is almost certainly the last of the non-floodlit early evening kick offs until next spring.
Given the 5.30 start I was impressed that not just both sides, but a large number of spectators, had all made it to the Tir Canol Playing Fields in time for kick off.
As I arrived there was some discussion whether to move the corner flags and goal nets from the very wet pitch to one of the three other Tir Canol pitches, but in end the referee was satisfied that the booked pitch, nearest the car park, was playable.
It may have been a wet surface, but it didn't effect what was a good game to watch. Both sides had 100 per cent league records going into the fixture, Olympic having three wins and Penlan two. A pair of penalties opened the scoring, Penlan going in front before the home side equalised.
The visitors looked sharper, and took their chances to lead 3-1 by half time. After the short half-time break a fourth goal put the result beyond doubt, and Penlan thoroughly deserved their comprehensive win.
The Swansea Senior League sits directly below the third tier of the Welsh League, and on the evidence of this game the standard is similar. The main thing holding back clubs who might otherwise progress is probably facilities, as most Swansea League teams play on park pitches. Tir Canol is a example, a large playing field with four pitches, none of then railed or even roped off.
