Ellesmere Port Town v Upton AA reserves

6.30pm  17 August 2015

West Cheshire League, Division Three
Ellesmere Port Town 2 Upton AA reserves 6 (att 18)

Keeping track of teams and grounds visited years ago is a challenge. In 1996 I watched Shell FC at what was then the Shell Sports and Social Club, a few years later Shell became Ellesmere Port FC and their ground became known as the Whitby Sports and Social Club.

Ellesmere Port FC are now in the Chester and Wirral League, the same competition that rivals Ellesmere Port Town FC were promoted from, during the summer, to step up into the West Cheshire League.

Both clubs are based at the Whitby Sports and Social Club, but the pitch that Shell used in 1996 is now a rugby ground, with football now played on a pair of neatly railed-off pitches further from the large clubhouse.

That meant a visit to Town's pitch was a new ground for me, and one that exceeded my expectations as the club have added a few nice touches, such as signage and a club crest on the home dugout, to make it a pleasant venue.

On the pitch the step up to West Cheshire League looks to be a steep one at present. This was their second defeat in their opening two league games, and Upton were well on top throughout.

The visitors led 2-0 by half time, and had doubled their lead before Ellesmere Port Town scored their first. A flurry of late goals completed the scoring, in what was an entertaining game.
