Clifford v Aberford Albion

6.15pm  3 August 2015

Barkston Ash FA, Prostar Cup, Second Round
Clifford 2 Aberford Albion 3 (att 43)

West Yorkshire League Aberford made hard work of seeing off a dogged Clifford side to progress into the last eight of the Barkston Ash FA's regular pre-season cup.

Twice the home side, who play in the Harrogate and District League, equalised against their higher-ranked visitors. The tie looked to be heading for a penalty shootout decider until Aberford scored in the 90th minute.

It was a lucky escape for Aberford, as minutes earlier Clifford thought they'd snatched a late winner, before the referee controversially ruled it out for offside.

The Prostar Cup (known as the Templenewsam Cup in its pre-sponsorship days) is a knockout tournament for a mix of Saturday and Sunday league sides. For groundhoppers it's a useful source of competitive football before league fixtures are fully underway.

Clifford is a small village next to the A1 between Tadcaster and Wetherby, and the football club plays on a pleasant recreation ground. There's a car park and a recently-built pavilion, plus a few park benches dotted around the pitch.
