Coundon & Leeholme Youth v Wheatley Hill WMC

11.30am  4 May 2015

Durham Alliance
Coundon and Leeholme Youth 4 Wheatley Hill WMC 0 (att 20)

Apart from a cup final four years ago this was my first experience of Durham Alliance football, but I'll be generous and assume a late season game with nothing at stake isn't typical.

Kick off was scheduled for 11am, but Wheatley Hill's players didn't arrive until after then, and so the start was delayed by half-an-hour. I'm not sure whether the late start was a factor, but for some reason it was agreed to just play two 30 minute halves.

Still, from my point of view I was just happy to have a game that was on, and to be fair to both sets of players it was a competitive 60 minutes.

Coundon and Leeholme have already won the league, and so a comfortable win against mid table Wheatley Hill was always likely. The home side did their best to even things up though, getting a player sent off for a verbal altercation with the referee about 20 minutes into the game.

The first half ended goalless, but the hosts stepped up a gear after the break, making light of their numerical disadvantage to score four times in the final 20 minutes.

Coundon and Leeholme Youth are based at Leeholme Recreation Ground. A modern pavilion provides changing rooms and separates football and cricket pitches. The football pitch is railed off along the far side and at both ends, while the side nearest the entrance and car park is open.

Not the greatest of games, but at least they played, and it set me up for an afternoon of sightseeing in Durham city.
