Cononley Sports v Cowling

6.15pm  7 April 2015

Craven and District League, Premier Division
Cononley Sports 2 Cowling 2 (att 45)

A local derby that had everything I enjoy about football at this level ... two sides playing a hard-fought competitive game, in front of a decent turnout of locals at a pleasant, and rather unusual, football ground.

Add the fact that it was a sunny, and mostly warm, evening, then the Coulthurst Memorial Ground in Cononley was a great place to watch a game.

Cowling are need of points in a battle to avoid relegation, but Cononley were in no mood to make life easy for them.

Cowling took the lead thanks to a great free kick, but the home side levelled before half time. Cononley went in front in the opening moments of the second half, but despite having the better of the match they couldn't extend their lead. Cowling hit back before the end to equalise and claim a point.

What the game may have lacked in skill and finesse, it more than made up for in the commitment of the players, and good old-fashioned entertainment,

The Coulthurst Memorial Ground stages cricket and football. The narrow football pitch is hemmed in tightly, and bordered on one side by a busy railway line. A small shelter, with a club name on the front, was shared by the home side's subs and a few supporters.
