Riverside v Uppingham Town

1.45pm  2 August 2014

Peterborough & District League, Premier Division
Riverside 3 Uppingham Town 1 (att 257)

Game two, out of four, scheduled for the day as part of a Peterborough-centred hop, but the first for me as I'd already been to the morning's venue at Yaxley FC.

The match still brought me to Yaxley though, as at least for the early part of the season a pitch in the small town is home to Riverside FC, who have been a bit nomadic of late and should be on a new ground in Peterborough before too long.

The current Queens Park venue, shared by fellow Peterborough League side AFC Stanground (if the league handbook is correct), is basic. Changing rooms are in a modern clubhouse that's quite a distance from the main pitch, that was roped off to comply with league rules.

Given that these sides, along with all the hop match participants over the weekend, had bought their opening fixtures forward a week specifically for this event, it wasn't a bad game. Riverside impressed early on, and led 2-0 by half time.

Uppingham pulled a goal back in the second half, but their hopes of a draw were ended by a last minute penalty, which also resulted in a red card for their keeper. To be honest I didn't really see what happened for the penalty, as I was sheltering to the rear of a packed gazebo trying in vain to keep dry following a torrential downpour which marred the game's final 15 minutes or so.

Most of the game was played in warm sunshine, but given the conditions towards the end the players deserve credit for continuing to entertain.
