Boldmere Sports & Social Falcons v Perrywood

3pm  9 August 2014

Midland Football League, Division Three
Boldmere Sports & Social Falcons 1 Perrywood 2 (att 26)

A summer merger of the Midland Alliance and the Midland Combination formed the Midland Football League, its four divisions spanning steps six to nine of the non-League pyramid.

This fourth tier match was the first at this level for Boldmere Sports and Social, after stepping up from the Birmingham Amateur FA. Given the strength of the Birmingham AFA, and the low standard of the Midland Combination's lowest division, I expect them to win this game with ease, but Perrywood had other ideas.

The home side started well, creating chances from the off and taking a deserved lead with a well-taken free kick after just eight minutes. But rather than putting them on the road to a comfortable win, some poor defending handed Perrywood an equaliser.

The Worcester-based visitors then went ahead, still in the first half, thanks to well-placed header that was a step above the quality normally seen at this level.

There were no goals in the second half, although Boldmere had plenty of chances and on the balance of play defeat was harsh. They'll have to tighten a questionable defence though if they're going to thrive at this level.

Boldmere's ground is decent without being exciting. The Boldmere Sports and Social Club, in Sutton Coldfield, is a busy place. A small 3G pitch separates the main sports field from the clubhouse and changing rooms. The main pitch has dugouts and is railed off on three sides, the exception being one end that has a fence separating it from allotments.
