A tremendous
local derby between two sides who provided plenty of entertainment for the
large crowd, ending in a deserved share of the spoils.
Pendle took
the lead after just five minutes, but a fantastic long-range strike brought
Earby level before half time. The visitors went back in front well into the
second half, but Earby deserved their late leveller.
It may only
be the second tier of the Craven and District League, but I’ve seen plenty of
football of a much lower standard at supposedly higher-ranked leagues, and with
local pride at stake there was no lack of commitment either. Given the
entertainment, it was a shame that the threat of bad light meant the game was
reduced to two 40 minute halves.
Earby play
at the village recreation ground, which is well enclosed and had just one pitch,
making it feel like a “proper” football venue. The changing rooms are next to the
pitch, part of the playing area is fenced off, and grass banking provides a
good view. There’s even a trio of park benches on top of the banking,
providing uncovered seated accommodation on either side and behind one goal.
Tonight the
crowd was split, with away fans, to seemed to make up more than half the attendance,
on one side, while Earby supporters were mostly on the far side.
