Formartine United v Fort William

3pm  13 April 2013

Highland League
Formartine United 4 Fort William 1 (att 173)

Formartine are favourites to win the Highland League this season, although it's tight at the top and they can't afford to drop too many points in their remaining games.

They were never likely to drop any against the league's bottom side, Fort William, but their rather laboured victory suggests they'll need to improve to take maximum points against better sides.

An early penalty looked to have put Fortmartine on the road to an easy win, and in the end I guess it did, but they were wasteful in front of goal and it took two goals in a minute just before half time to put them firmly in control.

I expected the home side add more goals in the second half, but they only managed one more, another penalty, while earlier a Fort William goal ensured the second half at least was level.

Formartine are relative newcomers to the Highland League, and have worked hard to turn North Lodge Park, on the edge of Pitmedden, into a pleasant venue. A pair of seated stands flank a pavilion on one side, while two small covered standing areas are opposite.
