Whalsay v Scalloway

7pm  Monday 9 July
Shetland FA, Fraser Cup Semi Final
Whalsay 3 Scalloway 0 (att 80)

Yet again I watched a Shetland match amid a cold wind that felt, even if it technically wasn't, gale force.

Presumably the players are used to it, and both sides made light of the conditions to produce a reasonable game on the 3G surface at Harbison Park.

Whalsay made a great start, waltzing to a two goal lead early on. Scalloway created half chances, but never really threatened to turn the tie around, and it was no surprise when Whalsay added a third goal with around 20 minutes left.

I know a number of hoppers visited Whalsay's ground when Shetland staged the Island Games. I doubt it's changed since then, and despite being a caged all weather pitch its stunning setting makes the effort of a 30 minute ferry crossing from Mainland Shetland worthwhile.

There's a path all around the pitch, so spectators can stand inside the fence. Given the weather, many elected to watch the game from their cars, and there's a good view to be had from the car park overlooking the pitch on the side next to the community centre.

After the game it was a short drive back to Symbister's ferry terminal for the crossing back to Laxo, about a 20 minute drive from Lerwick.
