Netherhall v Workington Red House

2pm  11 February 2012
Cumberland County League, Premier Division
Netherhall 3 Workington Red House 1 (att 11)

After the drama of the morning's match at Bransty this was a rather more sedate affair. Netherhall are league champions, and looked well on course to reclaim the title even before picking up three points in this game.

Red House worked hard, but were no match for Netherhall who played some very impressive football at times. The home side were 2-0 ahead by half time, and added a third in the second half before the visitors got a late consolation.

Maryport-based Netherhall play at Netherhall Rugby Union club's ground. The football pitch is beyond, and at right angles to, the main rugby pitch. While the rugby ground is railed off and has floodlights, the football pitch is just open, not even roped off.

The football club secretary told me the club would like to climb the pyramid, but at present they're hampered by a lack of facilities, and the considerable cost of the extra travelling a step up would entail. Their lack of support doesn't help, with a lot more people watching Netherhall's rugby match with Aspatria on the adjacent pitch. The talk of a new "step seven" Cumbrian league being introduced for next season seems to have gone quiet.
