Holmfield v Warley Rangers

2 September 2011
Halifax & District League, Premier Division
Holmfield 2 Warley Rangers 2 (att 70)

A niggly and ill-tempered game boiled over in the final minute. A robust tackle by a Warley substitute seriously injured a Holmfield player, possibly even breaking his leg, and after a delay the referee blew for time.

Until then the game had been entertaining, but littered with far too many fouls. It didn't really get going properly until the 56th minute, when Warley, who'd been just about the better of two evenly-matched sides, went ahead. Within 10 minutes Holmfield had scored twice to edge in front, but it was no surprise when Warley levelled.

A sunny evening tempted a large(ish) and raucous crowd to Holmfield Park. The ground, typically for the Halifax League, is in a public park, but there's a grass bank on one side of the pitch, giving a good view of the action and the impressive hillside views beyond.

  1. Good to see photos of a match I attended earlier that evening, especially when they make Halifax look like paradise!
